Our Early Years classes offer provision for 2 – 5 year olds who have a range of additional needs. We have a very flexible approach and the children are well supported by teachers, early years practitioners and teaching assistants.
When children join the Early Years, they are assigned a Key Worker. It is the Key Worker's job to be the main point of contact with families to ensure that there is excellent communication between the school and home. The Key Worker will also be the main person who carries out care and support needs so that children have a familiar and friendly face.
We work closely with a number of other professionals such as the Physiotherapist and Speech and Language Therapist. All staff in Early Years are well trained and have valuable experience of working with children and young people with Special Educational Needs. They work with the children using a range of strategies to maximise understanding and engagement. These include the use of Makaton, visual supports, communication aids and Intensive Interaction.
All behaviour is understood as communication and adults are skilled at interpreting what behaviours mean. There is a great emphasis on communication development, social development and independence as the foundations for learning in early years. The children follow the Early Years Curriculum and Development Matters through topic based learning which is adapted and differentiated to meet the needs of the children.
Learning is delivered through play and exploration and fun and enjoyment are at the heart of everything we do!
