Opening of Acorn Ward Garden
The New Acorn Ward Sensory Garden
Bart's Charity very kindly funded a beautiful new garden for Acorn Ward which was designed and installed by Timotay Playscapes. The garden was officially opened by patients on Acorn Ward on Tuesday 19th July, 2016.
A stay in hospital can be difficult both for the patient and the patient's family and the garden provides a much-needed and very beautiful haven. The fresh air and open space to be found there offer families a little respite from the hot and busy ward.
The garden was sensitively designed to provide stimulation for all children. There is a wheelchair accessible table, sensory planting to provide wonderful aromas and coloured walkways to reflect fantastic reds and yellows across the floor. The new bug hotel has encouraged children in the schoolroom to explore the mini-beasts living in the garden and the musical instruments dotted around allow even the quietest child to make him- or herself heard!
The garden was a labour of love by Hospital and Home Teaching staff who proposed the new garden in September 2014 and have stuck with it on it's complicated journey to fruition. And it was well worth it.
Here's what the local press had to say about it:
